West Hollywood Sunday Brunch Hot Spots
There's a lot to be said for the excitement of the nightlife in West Hollywood.
The music, the dancing, and all the perfectly dressed people that smell
like they just left the fragrance counter at Macy's. One of my favorite
times to explore the streets of Weho, however, is on any Sunday morning.
The atmospehere is quiet and relaxed, and there's no better way to start
your day than with a visit to one of the many fine eateries in the area.
Many restaurants in the city are open for breakfast or brunch on Sunday
morning. The following five made our list based on atmosphere, unique menu
items, reasonable prices and attentive, professional service. Sure, you
had a busy Saturday night but you will have to wake up eventually, so why
not start the process with an eye-opening meal at one of these Sunday Brunch
Hot Spots. Bon appetit!
Taste

One of our favorite brunch spots doesn’t really scream out at you. In
fact, if you’re not looking for it you may pass right by. It may have a
low-key exterior, but Taste on Melrose features a beautifully decorated
dining room plus a spacious patio area for outdoor dining. If you are not
sufficiently hungry upon arrival, you will be after taking a look at the
menu.
Feel like something light and healthy? A granola parfait with
granola, mixed berries and yogurt will definitely satisfy. Or if you’re
feeling a little spicy, try the Southwest Scramble with chicken
breast, roasted red pepper, red onion, white cheddar cheese, cilantro,
avocado, roasted corn salsa, crème fraiche, and rosemary garlic
potatoes. One of my personal brunch favorites is the Brioche French
Toast with caramelized bananas, almonds and Nutella sauce.Make your
brunch even more enjoyable with a bellini, or with a refreshing mimosa
available by the glass or carafe.
The careful preparation and beautiful presentation of each dish is impressive.
And, despite the fact that the restaurant is quite busy on Sunday mornings
(call ahead for reservations), the servers are cordial and most attentive.
The couple seated at the table next to me on the patio mentioned that they
are regulars at Taste. They commented that it is one of their favorite
restaurants in the area because the quality is consistently high.
Check the Taste website for special menus and offers.

Whether or not you know what you want when you arrive, you’ll have no
problem finding something to wake up the taste buds at Urth Caffé,
an interesting little coffee house and eatery on Melrose Avenue.
For a quick bite, a crunchy toasted bagel or buttery croissant pairs
nicely with a steaming cup of Urth’s organic coffee. If you’re in the mood
for eggs, try one of Urth’s popular dishes made with eggs from cage-free,
vegetarian fed chickens. The Salmon Scramble consists of three eggs
scrambled with natural smoked salmon, roma tomatoes and chives. The Italian
Omelette features three eggs topped with basil turkey sausage, roasted
peppers, roma tomatoes, fresh basil and mozzarella cheese.
If you prefer something a little sweeter, try the Urth Parfait
with organic granola, low-fat yogurt, and a fresh seasonal berry ambrosia.
The Urth Bread Pudding Breakfast consists of warm brioche bread
pudding topped with baked apples or baked bananas with steamed milk.
Urth Caffé prides itself on using organic and all-natural ingredients.
Hamburger Mary’s

Santa Monica Boulevard

Hollywood, CA 90046

Hamburger Mary's is a chain with several locations across the country,
and nothing could be a more perfect fit in West Hollywood. The restaurant
is fun and colorful and, as you'll find out, some of the servers are fairly
hunky too. There's even dance music and a disco ball in the men's room!
The food is quite good and the variety is exceptional. Mary's regular menu
consists of tasty burgers, spicy nachos and the giant Big Mama Mary's
Chicken Pot Pie.
The breakfast menu consists of traditional favorites like bacon and
eggs, plus a variety of tasty wraps. The Spanish Fly Wrap consists
of fluffly scrambled eggs neatly tucked in a flour tortilla along with
peppers onions and black olives. It tastes great and a generous supply
of multi-colored tortilla chips on the side makes the dish even more festive.
Parking in the adjacent lot is rather limited, but it is usually fairly
easy to find street parking near the restaurant and Mary's is within a
reasonable walking distance (10 to 15 minutes) of several West Hollywood
hotels. Hey, who wouldn't walk 10 minutes to see a restroom with a disco
ball?
Hugo’s Restaurant

What…pasta for breakfast? Hugo’s Restaurant on Santa Monica Boulevard
is no stranger to locals and is a definite “must go” when you visit West
Hollywood. And yes, in addition to the other creative dishes on their extensive
breakfast menu, a few of the dishes are pasta-based and just describing
them will undoubtedly make your mouth water.
Pasta Mama consists of fresh pasta scrambled with eggs, garlic,
parsley, Parmesan cheese and Hugo’s special seasoning. Pasta Papa
is Pasta Mama with the addition of bacon, chicken Italian sausage and scallions.
Pasta
Emilia, a personal favorite, is Pasta Mama with tomato, avocado and
cilantro.
If you want to spice up your morning a bit, try the Tamales and Eggs. Two
zesty tamales floating in a pool of tasty tomatillo salsa topped with two
eggs, avocado tomato cilantro salsa, tortilla strips, sour cream and cilantro.
If you prefer something hot and fluffy off the griddle, try the Pumpkin
Pancakes or the Strawberry Chai Spice Pancakes.
Hugo's was built on the founder's vision to "have a kitchen producing
original and wonderful foods found nowhere else”. Based on my experience,
they have accomplished this.
The Abbey
692
N. Robertson Blvd.
West
Hollywood, CA 90069
(310)
289-8410
www.abbeyfoodandbar.com
Known for their colorful décor and impressive selection of martinis,
The Abbey is a great place for Sunday brunch. The outdoor dining area is
spacious and comfortable, creating the perfect environment in which to
enjoy a relaxing breakfast and do a little people watching.
The Abbey is not exactly full-service because you must place your food
order inside at the service counter. Once you have done this, you are free
to venture outside and select a table. On a busy day, you may not see a
table right away but, based on my experience, the wait never seems to be
excessive and the food is worth waiting for. Prices are modest and portions
are generous.
You may wish to start with Crunchy Pecan Granola with dried fruit
and fresh berries or Piping Hot Oatmeal with sauteed apples and
dried cranberries. Griddle favorites include Mango-Papaya Crepes,
Black
Forest Ham Crepes, and Banana Flap Jacks with macadamia nut
syrup. If you're a seafood lover, try the Egg White Frittata with
shrimp, oven-dried tomatoes and spinach. If you're more of an omelet person,
try the Chicken and Wild Mushroom Omelet with fire roasted peppers
and onions.
The Abbey is on Robsertson Boulevard just south of Santa Monica Boulevard.
