Don't Forget To Tip The Boys...
It's Go-Go Dancer Appreciation Day in Weho!
Posted: October 2011
What's the crowd in West Hollywood tonight? Is it 'Occupy
Weho'? Nope, in fact the 'Occupy' protests around the country, a sluggish
economy and high unemployment figures will have to step aside briefly for
something much more important and appealing - it's the first ever Go-Go
Dancer Appreciation Day in West Hollywood!

Yes, like kids are attracted to a candy store, thousands of enthusiastic
males have turned out on a comfortable Saturday evening to eyeball an almost
unlimited supply of gorgeous go-go boys throughout the area. Technically,
it's referred to as Go-Go 'Dancer' Appreciation Day but, honestly, with
the exception of a couple of female dancers outside Yogurt Stop, this is
a beefy boy-stravaganza. Take the dancer above - he has an awesome body
and a great smile and, while he seems to be pointing at a fire in his hair,
it is simply a building light behind him creating the illusion.

Needless to say, there are go-go boys strategically positioned at all
the clubs in the area, plus the street between Eleven and Revolver has
been blocked to traffic and a stage has been erected for a series of competitions
that will allow the dancers, both professional and wanna-be gogo boys,
to show their stuff - literally - as the crowd votes by applause for best
twink, best butt, and hottest body, just to name a few. And, of course,
the crowd's enthusiasm is further fueled by a steady flow of Miller Lite.

Fortunately, for an evening in late October on which snow is falling
on the east coast, the weather is perfect for the boys to wear nothing
but a thong and a smile. I have to tell you, none of the boys dancing tonight
would be turned away if they stopped by my place for a visit. They all
have personality, great bodies and they definitely know how to use what
they have. And the dancers are not here just for fun, they are all being
shown some 'green appreciation' from cheering spectators.

Luckily, it is not my duty to pick the winners because it would be a
very difficult decision. There is a panel of judges on-hand to determine
the best of the best, and it is an illustrious group indeed. Marcellas
Reynolds (from TV's 'Big Brother' and former LA PRIDE main stage emcee)
can't seem to take his eyes off the dancers but his fellow judges, comedy
writer extraordinaire Bruce Vilanch (center) and West Hollywood Mayor John
Duran (right) were nice enough to pose for our camera.

Business is brisk at all the local clubs, including the newly-opened
(or is it reopened?) Revolver. In addition to the club activity, many local
businesses are holding special events and promotions in conjunction with
this first-of-its-kind celebration. And a big crowd is a great opportunity
for heightened awareness, so HIV testing trucks are positioned along Santa
Monica Boulevard to provide their valuable and much appreciated services.
Go-Go Dancer Appreciation Day is further proof that West Hollywood is
always on the cutting edge when it comes to events that promote free expression,
Equality and personal Pride.
